Pilates, Posture & Pain

3hr Workshop - $30 (discounted rate for Comox Community Centre teachers and trainers)

Pilates, Posture and Pain combines a philosophical exploration of pain science and human psychology with a practical exploration of pilates and body awareness exercises. We will explore the biological, psychological and social dimensions of pain and the power our perception and perspective has on our experience of it. We will explore how pilates and body awareness exercises can help to build mobility and strength while giving providing perspective on your pain or injury. The exercises will include variations, modifications and supports but also language and narratives to help foster a growth mindset within your sessions and across your relationship with your clients.

This is open to the general public, but has a lot of focus on how to communicate with clients for healthcare and fitness professionals.

Pilates for Men: From Rehab to Riding (Sunday)

3hr Workshop - $50

This workshop is designed for men who may be working through pain or injury in the back, hips or legs, but also those who are looking to feel stronger and more stable for the ski and snowboard season.

The goal is to help you gain greater mobility and stronger muscles, but also a better sense of your body. We will use pilates as a framework to build langage for the movement patterns and muscles of the spine, pelvis and shoulder blades and then learn to apply them to movements of our arms and legs.

This workshop is a prerequisite for a 6 week series which will take what you've learned and build progression and integration into your life.  If you have pilates experience you may be able to bypass this and join the 6 week series. Workshop attendees have first choice at spots in the 6 week program (Max 6)

1) Introductions (30 mins)

Ryan, Aligned Movement, Pilates -> Pilates for Rehab v.s. Pilates for Skiing+Snowboarding (15 mins)

3 Questions (15 mins)

2) Mobility for Control Session (30mins)

Tools+ Strategies: Breathing, Isometrics + AROM (Active Range of Motion) Exercises

Warmup your body and mind and learn how to actively experience and then control the movements of your joints and muscles. These are exercises that can be done for rehab, a warmup for a workout or just to get your body moving at the start of your day.

3) Strength & Stability Session (90 mins)

Tools + Strategies: Mat, Reformer, Front+Back Body -> Lateral + Spiral Lines -> Functional Lines + Ski/Snowboard Strength

Pilates Series focused on building strength and stability from our core outwards. We’ll use some of the muscles, movements and patterns we discussed in our mobility session to begin to push our muscles to fatigue, while aiming for precision and control.

4) Mobility for Rest & Recovery (30 mins)
Tools+ Strategies: Breathing, Foam Roller, Dowels, Balls, Stretching (Active+Passive), Rolling + Trigger Point Release, Active Rest

Help your muscles relax, improve circulation and calm the nervous system and improve your recovery time from strenuous efforts.

This workshop will be followed by a 6 week series focused on getting ready to ski/snowboard season. Workshop attendees have guaranteed spot in 6 week program (space limited).
